It has been made clear to us that Allah Almighty created Eve and married her to Adam, peace be upon him. They lived together in Paradise and then descended together to the earth.
- Allah Almighty said: {O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women.} [An-Nisa: 1].
- Allah Almighty said: {It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her.} [Al-A'raf: 189].
- Allah Almighty said: {And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will.} [Al-Baqarah: 35]. Then Allah Almighty said: {We said, "Go down from it, all of you.} [Al-Baqarah: 38].
The Holy Quran established the institution of marriage for Adam, peace be upon him, to be a divine tradition for humanity, aimed at providing companionship, love, fulfilling desires, and bearing offspring until the Day of Judgment. This concept has been reiterated in the Holy Quran concerning the marriage of other prophets and has been confirmed and emphasized in Islamic Sharia. It serves as the exclusive, pure, and blessed lawful means for the union of male and female, ensuring the continuation of lineage until the Day of Judgment. Allah Almighty says: {And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one} [An-Nisa: 3]. He also says: {And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.} [An-Nur: 32]
This has been affirmed in both the practical and verbal Sunnah through many Hadiths. Among them is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: “O young men, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it (marriage) controls the gaze and preserves one from immorality. And whoever cannot (marry) should fast, for it is a means of reducing the sexual desire”. This principle is established in family law regarding marriage and in contemporary personal status laws.
Marriage is a natural practice because it aligns with and suits human nature. The bond that united our parents, Adam and his wife Eve, is the bond of marriage. Islam has brought forth principles that correspond with sound human nature: {[Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.} [Ar-Rum: 30].
It is also a universal practice, as Allah Almighty said: {Exalted is He who created all pairs - from what the earth grows and from themselves and from that which they do not know.} [Ya-Sin: 36]. It is also a human practice, as He said: {And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.} [Ar-Rum: 21].
